There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. “Maybe the most important areas of progress,” Altman told Bill Gates, “will be around reasoning ability. Therefore, GPT-5 is expected to be more cost-effective and efficient compared to GPT-4, addressing the concerns about the high computational expense of its predecessors. Rival Google has also faced backlash over its AI Overview answers in search, indicating a broader skepticism towards generative AI. OpenAI’s new safety committee aims to address these concerns and reassure regulators and potential business partners ahead of future model releases. According to the report, OpenAI is still training GPT-5, and after that is complete, the model will undergo internal safety testing and further “red teaming” to identify and address any issues before its public release.

It’s hard to argue, however, that the modest iterative improvements that separate GPT-4 versions are comparable with an entirely new state-of-the-art model from Google, Anthropic, or Meta. GPT-4’s skeleton is 1.5 years old; that’s what counts against Gemini, Claude, and Llama, which surely leverage the most recent research at deeper levels (e.g. architectural changes) than GPT-4 can possibly adopt just by updating the fine-tuning. A 2025 date may also make sense given recent news and controversy surrounding safety at OpenAI. In his interview at the 2024 Aspen Ideas Festival, Altman noted that there were about eight months between when OpenAI finished training ChatGPT-4 and when they released the model. Altman noted that that process “may take even longer with future models.” While the exact parameter count of GPT-4 is not publicly confirmed, estimates suggest it’s around 1.5 trillion parameters.
